Firoz Shah Kotla's Tomb

As you first enter the Monument you will see Lush green grass with some old open air small pavilion style tombs, turn right and you look out over the Lake that the Hauz Khaz Monument overlooks, turn right again and you look at 3 adjoining Pavilion style tombs and behond that is a closed section of the monument that looking though the gates looks like it is an incredible Mosque under renovation, there is also a section of the wall fortification you can walk along.
If you go left you will first reach the Tomb of Firoz Shah Kotla who happens to have another major Archaeological site in Delhi named after him.
Then as you walk around the corner you have a mosque followed by a series of staircases underground passage ways, the Hauz Khas Monument will keep a Hobby Photographer entertained for Hours.

The Original Hauz Khaz was part of the city of Siri, the second medieval city of Delhi, During the reign of Sultanate Allauddin Khalji (1296–1316).

The name Hauz Khas in Farsi is Hauz = water tank, lake and Khas = royal so Hauz Khaz + Royal water tank or Royal Lake. t is also home to some of the hippest Indian designer clothing labels a large number of up and coming Indian designers.

Photographers, Artists antiques dealers.

If you walk straight up the Main drag at the end you will find a Free very visited Monument that is epic.

This Truely is a series of Monument that the locals just come to hang at all day.
You will see football games
on the grass areas and Indian generally just Hanging out.
The Hauz Khaz Monument overlooks a lake that was once the water supply for medieval Delhi.

As part of the second city of Dehli named Siri and the newly built Siri fort a vast amount of water was required so the water tank was excavated by sultan Alauddin Khalji‘s during his reign from 1296 to 1316 (Not that he actually lifted a finger to help or do any digging. The Tank fell into decay until Firuz Shah Tughlaq 1351–88 of the Tughlaq dynasty re–excavated the tank he also made it a lot bigger.

Feruz Shah ruled His new city Firozabad (known as Feroz Shah Kotla) the fifth city of Delhi.
He was a pretty smart dude that many call an enlightened ruler, The truth is he just loved building Monuments. At Hauz Khas, he raised several monuments on the southern and eastern banks of the reservoir.
Feroz Shah would also have his final resting place at Hauz Khaz.
Firuz Shah the 3rd ruler of the Tughlaq dynasty wh ruled till 1388 and his Prime Minister, Khan-i-Jahan Junana Shah a Hindu are responsible for building. Firuz Shah assisted by his Prime Minister was responsible for building several unique monuments mosques, tombs, pavilions, hunting lodges, Palace and irrigation reservoir of Hauz Khaz, Feruz died at the age of ninety due to infirmities caused by three years of illness between 1385 and 1388.

Feroz was also responsible for many public works programs that included the building of, 50 dams for irrigation across rivers, 40 mosques, 30 colleges, 100 caravanserais, 100 hospitals, 100 public baths, 150 bridges, apart from many other monuments of aesthetic beauty and entertainment.

Feroz was also responsible for removing lots of taxes and clamping down on the lavish lives lived by the Delhi Elite some modern Rulers could probably learn a lot from this old mogul Ruler.

It is Fitting that Hauz Hauz has become a trendy area and now Hauz Khaz monument has started appearing in tourist guides I originally found the monument when another friend posted a couple of pictures on Facebook and was amazed when I arrived my expectations where a small little tomb. Delhi has some incredible Archaeological sites awesome historic monuments that are probably of greater importance but if you want something to visit then have an early dinner in trendy restaurants of Hauz Khaz, then Hauz Khaz Monument maybe a good final destination for a day out in New Delhi.
